Tigers acquire Betemit

The Detroit Tigers have made their first move before the trade deadline, acquiring third baseman Wilson Betemit from the Kansas City Royals.

Betemit will start at third base immediately, replacing Brandon Inge, who was designated for assignment.

Inge is a solid defensive player at third base but was hitting just .177, which is just not acceptable coming from that position.

Martinez hit .302 with 20 home runs and 78 RBI’s for the Boston Red Sox last season.

Boston hoped to retain Martinez, but did not want to give him a long-term deal and knew he would generate significant interest on the open market.

Ordonez breaks ankle

Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez will be out the next six to eight weeks after breaking his ankle sliding into home plate.

Ironically, Ordonez had been limited to designated hitter duties over the past few weeks because of soreness in his ankle.

He didn’t make any contact with the catcher on the play at home plate, making it seem rather odd that it would have caused an ankle fracture.

Johnny Damon said he saw the play on television and was hoping it was just a sprain but knew it was probably more when the ankle turned the wrong way. (more…)
